What is the DESA®?
DESA® is our proprietary acronym for Digital Electroencephalogram Spectral Analysis, an EEG based neuroelectrical evaluation system developed at Harvard's Boston Children’s Hospital. At its core is an EEG, but there are five other parts to the DESA®.
The purpose of a thorough neuroelectrical examination is to analyze the central nervous system, its input processes, and the processes and expression of information. The brain puts out micro amounts of electrical energy that can be captured and evaluated. When analyzed by an expert, the data can reveal abnormalities previously undiagnosed and/or can confirm or rule out diagnostic impressions.
In addition to the EEG portion of the assessment, the DESA® study also includes Visual Evoked Responses/Potentials (VER) and Auditory Evoked Responses/Potentials (AER) as well as Frequency Modulated Auditory Evoked Responses (FMAER) and P300. Each of these components reveals a different aspect of neurological functioning.
The VER allows an objective look at data gathered as a light stimulus flows from the retina to the visual cortex of the brain. The proper identification of visual processing abnormalities is critical in a thorough diagnosis of problems.
The AER assesses the functional pathways as sound travels and is processed from the ear to the temporal cortex of the brain. Auditory abnormalities of a receptive nature can be clearly identified.
The FMAER is a specific auditory wavelength that “warbles” in pitch creating a sound the brain recognizes as language. It can identify language difficulties before they actually surface. In young children, this is extremely important in the context of recent findings that the brain can “rewire” itself when problems are identified at an early age.
The P300 evaluates the brain’s ability to identify random occurrences of different sounds. Its value is in identifying parameters of attention in different parts of the brain.

Incredible help for my son
We have had a tough time figuring out what was going on with our son. He is a very smart kid, but in the 3rd grade was reading at the first grade level. We are at the tail end of a very in depth analysis by Yellen & Associates. So far, they found 1 issue to be Irlen Syndrome. With special filters, his reading fluency has improved dramatically. We wlook forward to seeing what the rest of the analysis shows, and how we can further help our son. I would recommend them to anyone with a child that is having issues, to help develop a game plan to helping them succeed. On a side note, they are very nice!
Accessible and helpful for the whole family
Dr. Yellen has helped our family for the last 6 years. With teenagers, I was in need of much guidance. Dr. Yellen was also able to counsel my teenage daughter to help her with her problems. But it has been my son who has benefited most from working with Dr. Yellen. He felt out of control and depressed, but Dr. Yellen was able to recognize quickly that my son had a learning disability that we had not considered. Through some extensive testing, Dr. Yellen's assessment gave my son very needed accommodations to help him with school. He also gained more confidence through his understanding of his disability. My family continues to reach out to Dr. Yellen as needed. He is always there for us.
Diversity of Education
The Yellens have a deep understanding and true concern for the welfare of how education has lost it's diversity for children and how different they learn. Educational therapy and advocacy is what stands between the eduational system we have today and the future of children tomorrow. The Yellen's expertise opened up avenues for my son I would have never known existed. We are on the right path and have the Yellens for support for the next road ahead. Thank you for everything.
Kind and very thorough
I first met Dr. Yellen when my son was diagnosed with Irlen Syndrome. It's hard to find people who know about this condition. Dr. Yellen can both diagnose it and prescribe for it. We brought our second son in for different issues because of the trust we had in him by then. His wife Heidi is equally professional and kind. Both obviously enjoy working with children. Their services are more comprehensive and thus more expensive than some, but we felt we were in good hands.
above and beyond commitment
My son was recommended for a decompression and psychological therapy about a year ago. He's now 12 going on 13 and his interaction with Yellen & associates has had a tremendous impact on our son's every day life. Dr. Andrew Yellen was in charge of his psychological therapy and a few months later Mrs. Heidi Yellen stepped in and was shocked to know that he was under performing academically. Mrs. Heidi Yellen will be working with our son over the summer to engage him in academical activities that will sharpen his skills and bring him to a level of education that his school, unfortunately would have not accomplished! We are grateful to be working with a power couple in their respective fields, their commitment to not only our son but my family as a whole is above and beyond. Again thank you both! Best wishes, Lazaro & Mayra
